Here in the picture you see every single darn piece you need to assemble a bike. I will have the wheels built for me, and the rest I'll do myself.

I'm locking this so I can have sequential updates of the build progress, then I'll unlock it.

Here is the frame I'm going to use. Sorry about poor pic. I'll make sure to have a decent one when it's finished.

A couple of cool things about this frame. It is a 1991 specialized stumpjumper S-works. It was also NEVER BUILT! So essentially I got a '91 frame in mint condition. How awesome is that?

Cool thing number two. I purchased it from Eschen, Liechtenstein. This is a very small country (62 square miles) located in Europe. It is bordered by switzerland and austria, and it is ruled by a prince.

So maybe I'll call the bike Princess  Smiley

Headset/fork done. The cups and race were already on (luckily, since I don't have the tool to put them on), and the headset was brand new, so I just greased it up and put it on.

Minor drawback, I need to put on a front brake cable hanger on the steerer tube, but the steerer tube is cut pretty short, I'm going to have to find a cable hanger that is only 2mm thick. I haven't seen one on the net. They don't make 1inch headset tubes anymore, I have to find old stock.

Bottom bracket done. Went on beautifully. So easy. My first one. I think externally threaded bbs must be easier. Or probably it was the fact it was sealed and I didn't have to mess with bearings.

The top steerer tube is cut pretty short, leaving me very little space to add a front cable hanger. I needed one where the ring is only 2mm thick. Couldn't find one online, so I put together some parts lying around and took them to the local bicycle commuters yard, and donated my parts so I could scrounge through their parts. I managed to find one off a 10-speed.

Stem and handle bar on, also the front cable hanger, now painted black. Handlebar was cut to a length of 20 inches.

Brake cantilevers on. For those with a fine eye, yes I have my brake shoes reversed. This, plus "toeing" them in towards the front, gives me superior and quieter stopping power, IMO.

spacer spacing for 7 speed shifter and 8 speed cassette

Some cassettes come apart easily with an allen key. Others you need to punch the rivets out. And still others, like mine, need the old grinder!

So I took mine apart with a grinder and I wrecked the largest sprocket in the process. That's ok, I just went to bike store to buy a spare.

Why take it apart? My shifters are these '90-'95 shimano 7speed index thumbshifters. Though 7speed, they came with a magical 8th shifting slot. So hypothetically you should be able to use an 8 speed cassette right? Unfortunately the 7 speed indexing does not give you smooth shifting with an 8 speed cassette. Solution (sort of), take apart the cassette and put wider spacers in-between the sprockets.

But I have another limitation, my rear hub is for a 7/8 speed cassette, meaning there is not much wiggle room when making the cassette wider. Here's the sprocket/spacer combination I used to get smooth shifting.
sprocket 30 T (tooth)
spacer 3 mm
sprocket 26 T
spacer 3.28 mm
sprocket 23 T
spacer 3.5? mm (estimated)
sprocket 20 T
spacer 3.5? mm (estimated)
sprocket 17 T
spacer 3 mm
sprocket 15 T
spacer 3 mm
sprocket 13 T
sprocket 11 T (with attached spacer)

The two estimated ones did not have a number stamped on them, but visually I could see they were wider. I got these by again going to the bicycle commuter store and rummaging though old cassettes. I walked away with 6 hard-to-find spacers for $2, can't beat that Smiley

lol it's just brand new. It does come with a slight lubrication coating. But I'll oil it it up before the first ride.
