It's an extensive fandom, several movies, novels, and 1 TV series so far, based on a not too distant future where, to lessen "crime overall" the United States has approved a once a year bloodletting known as "The Purge".

In essence, all crime including murder is made legal for a 12 hour stretch.

Maybe not ever watch it alone, but it can be fun in groups... so long as you don't watch it on purge night.
